The next day, while Ward and June are gone for the morning, Wally and Beaver wait for Eddie Haskell to head over to Metzger's Field to play baseball, when Wally obliges Beaver's request to pitch him one. Wally figures it should be all right since Beaver always strikes out. This time Beaver does manage to connect to the ball, which ends up cracking a window of their parent's car. Not wanting to get into trouble especially after what their parents told them not to do, Wally and Beaver decide to get the window repaired before their parents get home, which will require them to raise $16. If they can't get raise that much money so soon, they will instead try to hide the fact of the broken window until they can get it fixed. They learn ...
Reviews of the Leave It to Beaver The Broken WindowThe boys are playing what looks like softball in the street in front of the Cleavers when Eddie sends a lucky hit through a window. Everyone takes off except for Wally and Beaver; it is their house after all. Ward isn't upset but no more ball playing close to the house. Ward recalls "in his day" he would have had to pay for the window plus get a strapping. June suggests how Ward's father would make him sell matches in the snow on Christmas Eve. That sounds cool to the boys. Then June is in trouble for driving the car with the emergency brakes on. A good distraction for Wally and the Beaver.
The next day, Ward and June are out looking at vacant lots as they are considering building. The boys are back at home and are on the way to Metzger's Field when Wally tosses a ball to Beaver. This time Beaver hits the ball, right into the passenger window of the car. When June calls they have an opportunity to tell the truth about the broken car window, but pass. Maybe Eddie Haskell will have an answer. He does: roll down the window and don't say anything; just act surprised when the window is rolled up. Wally doesn't feel comfortable with that. Maybe they can earn money somehow and get it fixed before their parents get home.
After "knifing" the piggy bank they have $1.85. They return bottles for 65 cents. They sell some stuff at the junkyard and they have a grand total of $6.35 which is about $10.00 short. The boys know Ward won't hit them, but they know their father will "look" at them which is worse.
They roll down the car window in the hope they can buy some time before they tell Ward what they did. At dinner they get worse news, Ward is planning on driving the family out for a picnic tomorrow. The boys balk, Ward knows something is up, but after looking at lots all day he's too tired to pursue it.
In the car the next day, Ward asks the boys to roll up the window. Beaver tries every excuse he can not to roll up the window but eventually he has to give in to the inevitable. But before he does, he confesses to breaking the window. As the window goes up, it isn't broken. Earlier, Ward had been in the garage and he slammed the car door, so he thought he broken the window; he took the car in early to have the repair done. Would the boys have confessed if they had seen the fixed window before they got into the car. Beaver says they would have, someday; someday after they had done something good and everyone was in a good mood. Everybody in the car has a good laugh.
The following day they are heading out to play ball. Eddie wants to know what happened about the window. Wally admits they told their father and he's taking the cost to repair the window out of their allowances. Eddie can't believe they told, and all that happened is they have to pay for the damage. His old man would have given him one in the puss; Wally and the Beaver have a really goofy father. Both Wally and Beaver warn Eddie to shut up about their father of Eddie will get one in the puss and it won't be from his father.
I can agree with Wally and the Beaver about the "look." Many the time I did something wrong, usually just stupid or foolish, and my dad would just say he was disappointed in me. I would have preferred a good old whipping. A whipping stung for maybe a minute but those wordsI'm disappointedstung for a lot longer.
For those of you way way too young, "knifing" a pig was to use the thin end of a butter knife to slide coins out of a piggy bank or any bank with a large slotted coin drop.
