Reviews of the 3.11: Surviving JapanThere aren't many people who weren't touched by the news footage they saw of the devastating Tsunami that hit Japan in March 2011 and the subsequent Fukushima nuclear disaster, but the coverage we saw on the news broadcasts couldn't convey the true emotion, and lasting effects it had (and still has) on the people of Japan. "3.11: Surviving Japan" is a documentary movie that shows us the side we don't get to see. American film maker Christopher Noland was living in Japan at the time, and the documentary opens with his own personal footage of the earthquake, followed by heart-wrenching views of the Tsunami as it destroys everything in its path. The earthquake and Tsunami both contribute to explosions at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant causing a meltdown, and billowing clouds of radioactive materials so high and wide that low levels of radioactive chemicals that leaked from Fukushima have been detected along the North American coast offshore Canada and even California. In the documentary Christopher, who volunteered to help with the clean up, interviews some of the people affected, those helping with the relief, and finds along the way the hidden truth of the Government response (or lack thereof) and the fears for the future, especially the health of the future generations. This is a poignant documentary, and although the Japanese people are still recovering from this disaster Christopher Noland's film shows us the incredible strength and fortitude they have in surviving one of the worst disasters of recent times. The film is hard-hitting, powerful but also superbly shot, narrated and edited and easily one of the best documentaries I have seen in a long time. Make sure you add this to your DVD collection.
